Motor neuron disease (MND) is when cells in the brain and nerves called Motor Neurons gradually stop working. Symptoms will include muscle weakness, twitches, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing.
Unfortunately, there is no cure and the condition will deteriorate over time and is nearly always fatal. A person’s life expectancy can significantly shorten, but some people with the right treatment reduce the impact it has on their lives and can live with it for many years. These treatments include physiotherapy, speech therapy and medicines.
The South Wales Motor Neurone Disease Care Network are a network of healthcare professionals coordinating multidisciplinary care and support for those with Motor Neurone Disease across South Wales and their carer.
The NHS website provides you with free articles, videos, tools and advice to help you make the best choices in adapting to life with Motor Neurone Disease.
